Dr. Heather grew up in northern Michigan and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with honors from the University of Michigan in 2002. She completed her general veterinary training with Colorado State University and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM), graduating Cum Laude, in 2008. Following this, she completed a 1-year rotating Medicine and Surgery Internship with North Carolina State University. Dr. Heather’s focused ophthalmology training consisted of a 3-year combined residency program in Comparative Veterinary Ophthalmology with Animal Eye Care Associates and North Carolina State University. She became a Board-Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist after passing the national American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) board examination in 2013. Dr. Heather opened the Virginia Beach location of Animal Vision Center of Virginia in 2015 and has recently expanded clinic hours to The Center of Veterinary Expertise in Suffolk. When she is not at the clinic (or the zoo!) caring for four-legged patients of all shapes and sizes, she enjoys spending time outside with her significant other, Christopher, and their two Italian Spinones, Bodhi and Fergus.

Melissa is a Chesapeake local from Great Bridge. She grew up working on Bergey’s Dairy farm at the age of 12. There she developed a love for animals all shapes and sizes. Melissa has worked locally in small animal care and specialty practice for 20 years, 14 of which have been spent in veterinary ophthalmology. “There is no better feeling than helping an animal in need. Working with Dr. Brookshire to provide an outstanding level of Vision care for animals in our community is the best job in the world," she says. Melissa has two wonderful daughters Brae (14) and Leah (7), as well as three rambunctious wiener dogs: Bruiser, Calvin, and Paisley. She spends her time off playing and chasing around with her kids, both 2 legged and 4 legged. As the Office manager of Animal Vision Center of Virginia Melissa is dedicated to making sure every visit is a pleasant experience and that each pet parent leaves with a clear understanding of the treatment plan and future goals.

Licensed Veterinary Technician

Born and raised in Cedar Hill, TN., Allyson has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she was accepted in the Veterinary Technology program. After graduation, she completed an internship with BluePearl Veterinary Partners of Franklin, Tenn., followed by a position in the group’s ER. She received her Veterinary Technician license in 2016. Today, Allyson is happy to be working in specialty medicine with Animal Vision Center of Virginia. Back in Tennessee, this avid animal lover has two horses, Molly and Luna.

Receptionist

Amari, from Virginia Beach, graduated from Ocean Lakes High School, attended the Chrsym Institute of Esthetics and is in the process of becoming a licensed esthetician. Having worked at The Virginia Aquarium and The Virginia Zoo, she finds comfort being around animals. She frequently dog sits an energetic Maltese puppy, Chase, and together they enjoy long walks on the beach.

A Kempsville High School graduate, Jason began working with us in 2019 as an intern from the Tidewater Community College’s Veterinary program, where he plans to complete his studies to be a Veterinary Assistant. Jason’s interest in this field began while volunteering at Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge in Virginia Beach. His enthusiasm for his job at Animal Vision Center of Virginia is infectious! At our practice, he assists with patient check-ins, filling prescriptions and minor procedures. At home, he has two Golden retrievers that keep him busy.

Ashlyn was born in New Orleans, Louisiana but moved to Virginia Beach at a young age. Her love for animals grew at a young age as well. Ashlyn recently completed a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at Old Dominion University and is now attending veterinary school at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.

Veronica, a Virginia Beach local, was introduced to us through Tidewater Community College's (TCC) Veterinary Assistant Program. She interned with us before coming aboard as our veterinary assistant. Veronica has an Associate of Science degree from Tidewater Community College and aspires to be a veterinarian in the future. Veronica has a dog of her own, Vance, who inspired her to take on her passion for animals as a career.

Samantha Gossman

Receptionist

Samantha was born in Virginia Beach and has lived in Utah and New York as well. She graduated from Centura College in the Dental Assisting program, but decided animals were cooler to be around! Her love for pets led to her work in general veterinary practice for five years before transitioning to specialty practice in veterinary ophthalmology. In addition to greeting clients and their pets at our practice, Samantha schedules appointments, discharges owners and their pets, and refills medications, among other tasks. With an affinity for giant breeds and exotic animals, she owns a beautiful 26-year old cockatiel named Zipper. Samantha lives with her fiancé, Andrew, and her daughter, Lily, in Virginia Beach.

Our medications on hand can treat animal vision symptoms and conditions ranging from topical antibiotics to pain management medications.

Surgical Therapy

In the event of surgery, we can safely perform specialized procedures not available with your regular veterinarian.

OFA Eye Exams & Registration

We are certified to perform these special exams to detect potential heritable eye diseases in dogs before they are passed on to future generations.

Genetic Testing for Prevention

We can detect specific ocular diseases through genetic testing. This can help you plan ahead for the life and care of your animal.

Free Exams for Service Dogs

Typically offered only during the month of May, we have elected to perform these examinations on qualified Service Dogs all year round.

Military, First Responder and Senior Citizen Discounts

We proudly support our military and senior citizen clients with discounted examinations.

ON-SITE CONSULTATION

We will gladly provide ophthalmic consultations for your patients at YOUR veterinary practice. Due to increased time allotments, please allow up to one week for these appointments.
